DEVELOPMENT OF MEDICINAL PLANTS VALUE CHAINS IN HOA BINH, NGHE AN, QUANG TRI, AND QUANG NAM PROVINCES

The overall objective of the proposal is to provide technical assistance for sustainable value chain development of medicinal plants to increase incomes for forest-dependent communities, reduce deforestation and forest degradation, reduce carbon emission and increase carbon sequestration and forest carbon stocks in the 4 participating provinces: Hoa Binh, Nghe An, Quang Tri and Quang Nam.

There are 4 specific objectives to be achieved in the technical proposal:

  • Improve capacity on sustainable production of medicinal plants for CFEs and forest dependent people to increase productivity and improve income, leading to reduce deforestation and degradation of natural forest;
  • Strengthen capacity on sustainable landscape issues for local (provincial, district and commune) institutions to address the unsustainable management practices on medicinal plant sub-sector;     
  • Improve business performance for CFEs on medicinal plants by improving their skills on business development planning, organizational development and management, and capacity for implementation, monitoring and evaluation of their CFE performance;      
  • Leverage resources from the public and private sector and communities through working with different medicinal plant value chain actors and investors to mobilize investments for scaling up medicinal plant activities in a sustainable manner.
