Project launch conference: “Improving women rights through bettering economic conditions in Sapa District, Lao Cai Province”

On September 29th, Vietnam Rural Industries Research and Development Institute (VIRI) collaborated with Sapa District Women Union to organize a project launch conference: “Improving women rights through bettering economic conditions in Sapa District, Lao Cai Province”.

Participating in the conference, Mr. Sung A Lenh, Sapa District Deputy Permanent Secretary, representatives from Sapa District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sapa District Labor, Veterans and Social Affairs, cooperatives and cooperative groups in Sapa District.

VIRI representative shared related information regarding UPS organization, VIRI as well as aim and activities in the coming period to all participants. The main aim of the project is to improve women rights through bettering economic abilities in Sapa District, Lao Cai Province. The project focuses on developing 03 economic models: handicraft group, natural soap and essential oil group, and dried fruit group. Total number of participating households will be 160 households, in which 80% are women of ethnic minorities.

Mr. Sung A Lenh, Sapa District Deputy Permanent Secretary, said that these activities are suitable for the demand of maintaining and developing characteristic products of Sapa District. These products are necessary products for Sapa market, contributing to diversifying tourist products in the district. Deputy Permanent Secretary proposed that related agencies such as District Women Union, and Vietnam Rural Industries Research and Development Institute collaborate well to ensure project efficiency and results.

Cooperatives and cooperative groups participated in the conference highly regarded the project aim and activities as well as expressing interests to participate in the project. Representatives of the cooperative groups and cooperatives have put forward commitments to participate in the project and to improve incomes for cooperative members especially female members.
