Diversification of orange products in Con Cuong district

Now, with the success of producs from orange which associated with community-based tourism, the value of oranges will increase significantly. Clean orange products will be one of the key tourism products, contributing to poverty reduction, environmental pollution reduction from orange in canals as well as tourism promotion for mountainous Con Cuong Districts.

Orange is one of the main fruit trees of Nghe An province. The area of oranges currently planted in Quy Hop, Nghia Dan, Thanh Chuong, Yen Thanh, Nam Dan and Con Cuong districts. Major Orange Varieties in Doai 2, Van Du, V2 and Song Con communes. So far, Con Cuong district has 255 hectares of oranges planted in Yen Khe, Chi Khe, Bong Khe communes and town…

Oranges are high economic value tree, yield value is about 400 – 500 million VND / ha / year. According to many orange growers, the price of orange will tend to decrease if the area of orange growing continues to expand because the current distribution system of the product is mainly through collectors network of traders. Consumption of products is maily used for fresh food, while post-harvest preservation systems, processing of products from oranges are not interested in development, so price low in the main havest season and high in other season.

In recent years, “failed oranges” appear more. Failed Orange is a phrase that people frequently use call for phenomenon orange that does not grow up then yellow, rot and fall. Especially during the rain season, the rain and sunshine changing frequently that cause the  outbreak phenomenon and orange fall out alot. Orange can not be used, throwing away and become a big waste. So many failed orange cause congestion canal, environmental pollution.

In this situation, the project “Study on orange related products development  in Con Cuong District, Nghe An Province” was implemented from August 2016 to February 2017. This project is part of Big project “The Project for Livelihood Diversification through Heritage Tourism in Remote Agricultural and Fishery Village”which is funded by JICA, Vietnam Rural Industry Research and Development Institute (VIRI) is a consultancy unit.

Project Objective: Help the participating households to know how to care , harvest and process products from oranges: orange, essential oil, orange concentrated juice, orange candied …. in the scale of household family.

Main activities of project: technical support in caring and harvesting oranges; designing the basket and tourist bags; trial production of orange concentrated juice, orange wine, orange candied, orange essential oil, orange soap, registration and completion of food hygiene and safety procedures, developing local  brands of orange. Through the project activities raising the value of orange by “clean” technology through the processing of products from oranges, opened up a new perspective on the local tourism products.

The project has built a cooperative group producing products from  Pha hamlet Orange. Experimental production, testing and transfer technology production of orange products for cooperative groups. With new and not complicated technology, the products are made from clean orange, including orange candied, orange concentrated juice, orange soap, orange oil, orange syrup … have been successful. The cooperative group has completed procedures of food hygiene and safety certificate, product testing. Product design package, product label are also finished.

 

Now, with the success of producs from orange which associated with community-based tourism, the value of oranges will increase significantly. Clean orange products will be one of the key tourism products, contributing to poverty reduction, environmental pollution reduction from orange in canals as well as tourism promotion for mountainous Con Cuong Districts.
